winter awakening

It will soon be your first full winter

As snowfall

Dancing in wind

I’ve been watching you die

Over again

In falling, dry leaves

Once burning bright as the sun,

I blinked

And the trees were bare

Just like that morning

I thought you were immortal

And then you were gone

In an instant

Like a candle burned out

The smoke is still choking me

The embers still smoldering

And I hope as the frost settles

Deeper beneath these green mountains

I feel you awaken again

That lightning sharp

Chill in the air

As electric as you.

The sting of my cheeks in the cold winter wind

Might as well be your palms

On the sides of my face

Saying, baby, somehow we’re both free
